Umai Sushi

Umai, (うまい) meaning “good” or “tasty” in Japanese, is an enticing sushi restaurant located in Printer’s Row. There are many places to grab sushi in the city, though I think that Umai is one of the better options. With fresh flowers on the table, a colorful mural on the wall, and an attentive wait staff, the mood is very welcoming. The blonde wooden walls and natural lighting create a warm atmosphere, even on the coldest of days.

Umai is a short walk from where I live, so I often have business lunches there. But it’s also perfect for a night out!

Chefs at the sushi bar, look up and smile, from time to time, as they create their masterpieces. From seasonal exotic fish to an excellent sake list, signature maki, and Japanese BBQ, there are great dishes for all palates. On a recent visit I ordered my usual favorites: spicy edamam, the Umai salad ($11, with mixed greens, green beans, romaine, carrot, tomato, Hawaiian sweet potato, dried nori and roasted sesame dressing, plus added salmon for an additional $8), and the Mexicana roll ($12, with tuna, salmon, wasabi tobiko, spicy mayo, avocado, cilantro, and jalapeño, all topped with chili oil and lime juice). For $15 at lunch, the Bento Box also offers a sampling of gyoza (pork pot stickers), six pieces of a tuna roll, a small salad, some fresh fruit, and sashimi.

Reservations are recommended. In the evening, it’s always busy: a sign of a delicious dining spot!
