The Pet Impressionist
A Chicago-based artist creating beautiful art for those who love pets
Are you a pet lover? Is it difficult to imagine your life without your furry companion? Or do you have relatives or friends who won’t go anywhere without their dogs, or are posting their cat photos daily? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to get in touch with Jim Carroll, The Pet Impressionist. An artist and pet lover himself, Jim creates commissioned pet portraits and slice-of-life scenes — colorful impressionist paintings, and elegant charcoal and graphite drawings. Jim does all of his work from photographs supplied by the pet owners themselves. “I strive to capture not only the likeness of these companions we adore, but also a hint of their character, their nobility and the love we share with them.”
Jim says, for as long as he can remember, he’s been creating ideas, pictures, stories, places and experiences—all with the hope of making people smile, laugh, cheer, or even shed a tear. Jim discovered the field of Advertising while at Drake University, and went on to spend 30+ years in the marketing agency business in Chicago. He eventually found himself wanting to pursue his original talent for drawing, along with his love for impressionist painting.
According to Jim, “I honestly started with pets as a marketing idea, but I’ve fallen in love with what I do. People get pretty emotional about their pets. They seem to love my work and the way I’m able to capture their pets’ personalities. It’s a great feeling. It’s also given me a philosophical appreciation for the bond we humans have with our pets. They love us and they let us love them — rather unconditionally. And sometimes, when life gets overwhelming, they remind us that we still matter.”
